Holly Lovell is a superb “been there, done that” artist who has lived in Australia, New York City and now Denver. Her new album Hello Chelsea took shape in the remote woods of Wisconsin alongside acclaimed producer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver). The new release features “When Did I Lose You” – a song that ends with heartfelt wails and primal screams.
“‘When Did I Lose You’ is about losing someone so slowly that by the time you wake up to it, you can’t figure out how long you’ve been sitting there alone,” says Lovell. “There is a breakdown at the end where we recorded ourselves wailing and screaming. I was worried it was too much at first, but in the end I chose to keep it because when I listen to it, it’s the release of grief from the body.”
Lovell’s music is a beautiful counterpoint to the pop fluff that dominates the streaming services. If you’re a fan of Patty Griffin and Brandi Carlile, make a beeline for this album. The title song is moody and masterful.
