Father John Misty shares the delicate, bracing “Goodbye Mr. Blue”

As Father John Misty continues to build up to his forthcoming album, the ambitious yet intimate Chloë and the next 20th Century, he’s shared the latest single from the project, “Goodbye Mr. Blue”.

With a touch of Cat Stevens (or Yusuf) in its instrumentation and Misty’s signature bleak yet beautiful lyrics on full display, it makes for a particularly striking salvo. Conflating the loss of a dear pet with the end of a relationship he sings “This may be the last time / The last time I put on my shoes / Go down to the corner and buy the damn cat the expensive food,” capturing a dreary, sad state of affairs that’s all too real for all too many of us.
