boygenius dig deep on the cruising “Not Strong Enough”

We’re now inside of a month from the release of boygenius‘ debut album The Record. To tide us over, the trio of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus have given us another taster of the record in the form of “Not Strong Enough”.

Whereas the first three songs shared from The Record were each helmed by a different member, “Not Strong Enough” finds boygenius taking turns each with a verse. Bridgers sets the tone with the macabre “black hole opens in the kitchen / every clock’s a different time”, drawing out the dissociative blues that fuel the song. As driving rhythm and guitar push the song into road trip territory, Baker takes the second verse and further emphasises the moodiness of the track; “I don’t know why I am the way I am”. Just as the song seems as it might run aground on the trio’s exertions in emotion, Dacus brings up the rear with her mighty voice ushering in the chant along hook “always an angel / never a god”. As the trio’s voices join together they find strength in unity and “Not Strong Enough” builds to a towering finale that belies its title.
