London-based Spanish transplant Jess Smyth aka Biig Piig has shared a first taste of what’s to come from her in a post-lockdown world. With the promise of a longer body of work to be released soon, she has today shared the sashaying “Don’t Turn Around”.
She says the song is “my post breakup, pre glow up tune; finally getting to confidence through self-love and letting go of toxic relationships. JD Reid [slowthai, Mabel, Kojey Radical] showed me a song he had saved in his sample collection called ‘Love for the Sake of Love’ by Claudja Barry. The energy of that track instantly just made me wanna move so badly. You might have heard the sample before in Montell Jordan’s iconic tune ‘Get It on Tonite’, but it slaps every time and the feeling Claudja Barry captures is absolutely timeless.”
Buoyed by simple drums and that indelible Montell Jordan sample, “Don’t Turn Around” positively captures that feeling of stepping outside and truly feeling yourself. It’s the sound of strutting down the street, finally accepting your own power, knowing people are taking a look at you as they pass, and loving every second. Biig Piig’s voice flows mellifluously around, from singing to rapping, never anything less than full of prowess, thinking back of a former flame, but realising it’s just not worth it – “Don’t Turn Around”.
