Biig Piig invites us into her safe space on captivating new tracks “Oh No” and “Liahr”

Having already dropped a couple of great singles this year, Jess Smyth aka Biig Piig is keeping us hooked by continuing her pattern of sporadic drops. Today brings the double treat of two new tracks called “Oh No” and “Liahr”, further adding slight detail to her rich sound.

She says that “Oh No” is about feeling “that the safest place to be was my room – when I get paranoid or anxious or upset, hiding away felt like the easiest thing to do. Which is mad, because then quarantine happened and that literally was the safest place to be.

Meanwhile, “Liahr’ is about not trusting myself in recent relationships. I feel I’ve been running into things headfirst and believing myself when I say I’m all in, but then falling out of it as quickly as I fall into it. ‘Liahr’ is basically a one-to-one with myself about how I need to chill and stop hurting myself and others ‘cause of goddamn trauma.”

“Oh No” is soft and caressing in its blue-hued guitar and Biig Piig’s whisper-sung vocal. In listening, we do genuinely feel like we are sitting on her bed with her as she quietly divulges all of her anxieties and worries. While many of the words could be worrying, there’s a warmth to “Oh No” which suggests she’s in a safe place, and is inviting us to be there with her.

“Liahr” makes a perfect partnership with “Oh No”, again delicately pulling us into her inner-monologue. This time she employs a propulsive drumbeat, as if she wants to skip through all the awkward and uncomfortable memories, rather than dwell in them. She’s not letting herself off the hook though, and in the chorus she fronts up to herself, telling us she’s going to be honest from now on – and expect the same from any future partners. It’s a subtle but smashing moment.
