Built To Spill have never been the most commercially successful band, but it is worth noting that their last album, 2009’s There Is No Enemy, was their highest charting record ever, peaking at #50 on the Billboard charts. But, while they may not be big money generators, the quality of their releases is consistently strong, with a couple classics under their belts in Perfect From Now On and Keep It Like A Secret. Even more amazing is the fact that the band has released most of their records on a major label, Warner Brothers, while retaining much of their indie spirit.
Well, after a pretty quiet year which saw them recently playing a few shows, the band is ready to begin work on their eighth full-length album, which frontman Doug Martsch would like to have out in 2012. But, the singer also realizes that it might take a little longer, as he told Rolling Stone: “It might even be 2013. I haven’t made a record in less than two or three years in a long time.”
The band plans to self-produce the new record and has already begun the writing process, with recording hopefully commencing soon. The band also has hopes to play more live shows in 2012, with “plans to go to South by Southwest and to take part in a Boise showcase,” and “also hopes to find a suitable partner for a double-bill tour.”
As for what to expect from the new Built To Spill offering, Martsch notes that “I’m trying to keep the songs short and there’s a couple of pretty poppy songs. But they’re all in different stages right now, and it’s hard to tell what real direction they’ll take.”
