GZA announces new album, puts Liquid Swords 2 on hold

Some disappointing news for fans of the Wu: member GZA is delaying the follow up to his 1995 album, Liquid Swords. Originally intended to drop in late 2010, news of the album created a buzz for two reasons: A) Swords is among the best rap albums of all time, and, B) RZA was to produce the album in its entirety. Now it’s been pushed back to an as of yet unknown date – but almost certainly no sooner than 2012.

It’s not all bad news. Taking to his twitter, the Genius declared intentions to record another album. “This project will have a visual and audio element. In a league of it’s own,” he said. Setting the bar high, eh? While a sequel to Swords is exciting, the resurgence of the “do ‘another’ of your best albums” is simply far too predominant currently. In waiting, GZA has the chance of eventually releasing it to an audience less tired of the gimmick. The album will likely deserve the attention – as good as it was, Raekwon hardly brought RZA in for Cuban Linx II, making it less of a natural sequel than he’d have you think. GZA sees it differently: RZA was responsible for the cuts on the classic, so why change up the formula? Yet, the producer’s going to be busy filming a martials art movie (and it’s about damn time that happened), so until he can refocus solely on music, we can only hope this mystery album will tide us over.

ps- If you’re wondering what in the hell RZA and GZA are doing with Bill Murray, do yourself a solid and watch Coffee & Cigarettes.
