There was a time when selling-out meant something. All an artist had was their integrity, whether it was Paul Westerberg, Kurt Cobain or Eddie Vedder. These days, when people don’t pay for music, that line has blurred and isn’t as unforgivable as it once was. Having your favorite song in a commercial may suck in that it takes away the personal nature of the tune and associates it with a car or a department store. On the other hand, the bands we love need to make some money in order to continue to make music. Who can fault them for licensing a tune, especially when it is for something as delicious as Miller Chill or as rad as Target?
Whatever your opinion, or for that matter, whether or not you like Vampire Weekend or The Black Keys, shouldn’t matter for enjoying this clip. But it’s hard to deny there is something meta going on here, I mean, it is The Colbert Report. Behind every laugh is a truth. Enjoy.
