Courtney Farren balances the equation on “Mathematical”

Both music and mathematics require precision, and that’s what LA artist Courtney Farren brings to every composition. Her new song “Mathematical” is personal yet profound – a postcard from the edge penned by a “’97 baby who grew up at Chuck E. Cheese.”

“It’s hard to sum up how I feel about ‘Mathematical’,” says Farren. “To quote myself within a quote, ‘It’s painful, it’s simple, and it’s too hard to explain.’ Producing for myself can sometimes be a grueling process, but everything just spilled out for this song. I pretended to know how to play keyboard better than I do, and I played the intro. I took out a wooden spoon and started banging a potlid. I added a bunch of bird sounds. This is a freeing song, and I’m grateful to have had my friend Charlotte mix it since she always understands me. ‘Mathematical’ exists and I’m happy it does.”

Farren is blessed with a voice that evokes deep feelings in the listener, just like all-time greats such as Dusty Springfield, Aimee Mann and Bonnie Raitt. Her subdued-yet-powerful vocal on last year’s “Will I Ever Love Me” is one of the most memorable of this decade.

Farren kicks off an extensive North American tour next month that starts in Seattle and concludes with two shows in Mexico City. Check the tour schedule because it’s your chance to hear an American treasure.
