Circuit des Yeux has long been an agent for primal adaptation, the Haley Fohr-centric outlet finding purpose in alchemical processes. Her work is equal parts avant-garde opera theatricality and orchestral opulence, with a fiery indie rock amplitude thrown if for good measure. Since she released her acclaimed 2021 album, -io, fans have been waiting for any sign of new material. And with the release of surprise single, “God Dick“, back in October of last year, all eyes and ears were turned toward what most hoped was an eventual confirmation of a full new album.
And today we have that confirmation. Halo on the Inside is due out March 14 via Matador Records. Recorded with producer Andrew Broder (Moor Mother, Bon Iver, Lambchop), it finds Fohr focused on the concept of metamorphosis in all its various stages, described in the press release as “a rhapsodic, hedonistic, dance floor-adjacent, pagan-friendly, horns-adorning wall of sound and emotion”.
Lead single “Megaloner” is an industrial pop behemoth, comprised of waves of synths streaked black like oil and offering little in the way of escape from their inky depths. Its opening recalls the stark percussive thump of Nine Inch Nail’s “Closer”, though we’re soon enveloped in Fohr’s inimitable vocals and tossed into a scorched pop world where Tears for Fears released The Land of Rape and Honey instead of Ministry. The moody orchestral framework that supports her corrugated synth atmopsheres is strong enough to withstand practically anything that she throws at it. The track is something of a beast, one that gnaws at anything within reach and isn’t content to subsist on scraps. It wants it all, and it wants it now.
“‘Megaloner’ is an anthem for the place that exists after an action and inside its consequence,” says Fohr. “Prices are being paid and hope is our currency. I’m singing about endurance, faith, agency, and the singular, unbelievable path toward one’s own fate.”
