Jason Balla of Dehd has offered a new single under his Accessory moniker, the latest song in a series of standalone tracks that he’s shared since his solo project’s debut album, Blue Tape, was released back in 2018. He uses this outlet to explore moody atmospheres and harsh sonic terrain, finding beauty in these dissonant landscapes. His songs deftly balance between theatrical amplitude and intimate revelation while pulling apart the reckless structures of pride.
“Chain Link” opens with ghostly whispers and feedback-soaked guitar tones before everything drops out for a moment before Balla’s voice pieces the darkness. The track deals in overt shoegaze aesthetics so dense that the listener is quickly pulled into its rhythmic gravity well. It’s a churning geyser of melodic friction, punctuated by tectonic movements and volcanic expressions of sound.
Accessory will head out on tour starting in Chicago on Jan 15. He’ll be taking along an “XL version off the band”, which includes musicians from across the Chicago music scene — likeminded artists culled from bands like Deeper, ULNA, Desert Liminal, Meat Wave and TV Buddha.
