From his own reminiscence, songwriter and producer Saint Jude takes us back to classic breakbeat in his latest single, โNo Angelsโ, out on Slow Dance Records.
Originating in the mid-1970s by DJ Kool Herc who took drum breaks from old funk records and played them during his West Bronx block parties, breakbeat was the foundation for early UK rave music.ย Jude wandered South Londonโs quiet streets during lockdown and found inspiration for slowing down drum and bass into his own psychogeography.ย
Jude explains: โThe message in โNo Angelsโ is about more than lockdown specifically. Community and solidarity is the most important thing, and will always be in conflict with the forces of capital and money.โ
The accompanying video for “No Angels” was directed by Jude alongside Sal Repath, with footage shot in Corsica Studios, Forest Hill and other South London haunts. Watch it below or listen to the track on streaming platforms.
