Northern Irish quartet Junk Drawer are releasing their new EP The Dust Has Come To Stay next month. It’s been preceded by the great “Tears in Costa” and today’s new one, “Railroad King”. Jake Lennox takes the lead on this one, and he reveals:
“I’d written the lyrics to this song before I’d realised I was on the autistic spectrum, but the lyrics made total sense once the realisation hit. It’s about not wanting to be away from the public world, adventuring happily with my imagination; walking by myself and making up songs etc. It also references the autistic feeling of feeling like my body is just a vessel that I want to ‘zip off’ to be my true self.”
While the fact that Jake is on the autistic spectrum is not a laughing matter, there’s no way to listen to “Railroad King” and not smile. We’ve surely all receded into imaginary scenes and songs while walking along, and Junk Drawer bring that mental world into vibrant reality on “Railroad King”. Why Jake ends up as the “Railroad King” is a mystery – but the joy of imagination is no explanation is necessary, and Junk Drawer exploit that lack of sense to the fullest on this creative pop rocker. You’ll no doubt have its jaunty and infectious melody stuck in your head after – until your brain morphs it into something completely new that you can’t stop singing.
