London-based Swedes Francobollo have been gone for a few years, but have not been wasting time. They’ve now built their own studio in East London, and have used it to create their next fully DIY EP called Good Buy, which will arrive this summer via Permanent Creeps. Today they’ve shared the first song from the EP, “Modern Life Is Getting Old”, saying:
“Modern Life Is Getting Old is about living in a city of a country that is not your country, when you are a country boy at heart. That can sometimes cause a bit of confusion. Breathing clean air is luxury these days, modern society has a lot to work on.“
Underscored by helium synths that give the song a cartoon monster movie feel, “Modern Life Is Getting Old” quickly reminds us why we love Francobollo and their weirdly wonderful take on indie rock. Lead singer Petter sounds wearied and bedraggled as his voice bobs through the song, listing his worries with a tuneful sigh that impresses on us the weight he feels in his soul. “Look up to the sky in the search for hope / as you dig yourself another hole,” he sings, but even as he describes the various issues drowning him, Francobollo ensure the song remains jovial, with tinkling adornments, silly backing vocals and various little explosions – almost as if the world’s brightness and happiness is mocking him as he mopes along in his sad bubble.
