Swedish trio ViVii are building up to the release of their second album, which is projected for next Spring. Following a couple of singles released earlier this year, we have the pleasure of bringing you a third taster of what’s to come in the form of “Fool Alone”.
They introduce “Fool Alone” by saying: “A Teenage love that keeps you hospitalized. A buzz that you can’t and don’t want to get out of. We wanted the song to feel like it was played by elementary school kids sitting in a circle playing guitars, tambourine and bongo drums.”
Beginning “Fool Alone” with a guitar that sparkles and reflects with a sheen that will instantly recall late 90s faves, ViVii transport us back in time to a simpler life, where friends and people you fancied were all you cared about. Caroline Jonsson’s high and youthful voice comes in, leading us deep into her daydream where she imagines showing her crush her bad poetry. ViVii delicately lift the song into the chorus, where she wistfully wonders “do you think me? / because I always think of you.” Her tortured heart and mind are keeping her up all night in pining agony, as she imagines a beautiful life they could have together, before deciding she’s “a fool alone.”
Emil Jonsson takes over for the second verse, filling in the other half of this shy and flirtatious pairing, and he’s equally smitten – “you’re like a storm and rainfall,” he admits. They once again come together in the chorus, and ViVii build it up subtly but beautifully, before they add some wordless vocal melodies to cap off “Fool Alone”. Overall, it’s a perfectly-judged teenage melodrama that makes you wish you could be back there in school, reliving that secret attraction as if it were the only thing in the world that mattered – and while the song is playing, it’s the only thing that does.
ViVii’s “Fool Alone” will be available on streaming platforms tomorrow, December 2, but for now you can listen exclusively below.
