Zueva pushes herself “over the edge” on her propulsive new single

Zueva is a Russian-born Norway-raised songwriter who has been taking her time to build up her artistic voice, releasing just a handful of singles over the last couple of years. She returns today with “over the edge”, which seeks to broaden her sound and reach. She says:

“Over the Edge is a restless tune with summer vibes. I wrote about the feeling of being kinda on the brink of a breakdown, while the producer Snorre Sønderland delivered a vibrant instrumental with 80s synths and upbeat drums. The song is basically an intense merge of our musical approaches, which resulted in punk-infused indie pop. The process was really fun, I feel like I found a new way to express myself as an artist.”

A far cry from the glacial beauties she’s previously released, “over the edge” rushes forward on quicksilver synth pulses and energetic percussion, giving it a laid-back drum’n’bass feeling. Zueva’s voice maintains its spectral grace in this world, but her exhaustion and insecurity are also plain to hear in her words and delivery; “you keep saying I care too much / I ain’t got time to get depressed / there must be another way to fall in love.” When it comes to the free-falling chorus “over the edge, either you or me / who’s it gonna be?” we suddenly feel like we’re suspended over the edge of the cliff, about to collapse – only to be caught again by the unstoppable beats and web of synth. Zueva has produced something magical in “over the edge”; a song that is equally enjoyable when needing to get pumped up, or when you just want to collapse into bed, relax and float away.
