Wilco starts label; works on new album

Wilco has the unique trait of fashioning its band identity through its relationship with labels: a legendary and thoroughly-documented breakup with Reprise (a Warner Music label), making Yankee Hotel Foxtrot available over the internet label-less & pro bono, and at last an arrangement with Nonesuch (a Warner Music Label). In the next scene of this drama, the Chicago-based indie launches its own record label, dBpm, and teams up with Anti- Records (who distribute through Warner) of Neko Case and Tom Waits fame.

Tweedy’s first contact with Anti- came through his work producing Mavis Staple’s incredible You Are Not Alone. He was thoroughly pleased with the results, though he ultimately came to the decision to team dBpm up with Anti- for distribution for their shared vision.

“This is an idea we’ve discussed for years,” said Tweedy. “We really like doing things ourselves, so having our own label feels pretty natural to me. And, to be working with ANTI- a label that has its roots in a label that was started by a punk rock guy to sell his own records seems like a perfect fit for us.”

Tweedy also disclosed that Wilco is hard at work on the follow-up to Wilco. Don’t believe me? Here’s the picture evidence (via Altsounds):
