Watch: Sigur Rós – “Varúð”

In the fifteenth and penultimate video for Sigur Rós’ Valtari Mystery Film Experiment series, Icelandic director Björn Flóki takes on album highlight “Varúð” and manages to make it sound better than ever. In the director notes for the clip, he explains:

“Sigur rós has an ability to make sorrow beautiful. when I listen to varúð I feel this overlap and struggle between sadness and beauty, between darkness and light. an overwhelming feeling of being buried in darkness but being just barely able to escape into the light, if you try hard enough. this is the feeling I’ve tried to bring to the video.”

The video follows a young girl around a warehouse, as she collects parts for her self-made helmet that seems to allow her to view the world around her as it was in the past–a sunny woodland. Full of wonderful shots and a great climax, this Valtari film series is turning out to be something of a gift in itself, for all these majestic videos it has brought into the world.
