Ty Segall comes roaring back into town to save us all with the release of his 16th album, Possession, due out May 30 on Drag City. Co-written by longtime collaborator Matt Yorka, the record paints a vivid portrait of American life and the struggles we face as we make our way through the complicated infrastructure laid out before us. Strings and horns add to the raucous cacophony, supporting Segall’s trademark riffs and vocal harmonies.
He offers up the guitar and sax roar of “Fantastic Tomb” for our first taste of the new album. Mikal Cronin’s cool skronk mixes perfectly with the highway rock that Segall has on tap. An epic story-song, it tackles themes of wealth inequity, bad decisions, and the consequences of ill-considered choices.
