Track Review: Toro Y Moi – “Saturday Love”

[Carpark; 2011]

The sublime character that is Toro Y Moi (Chaz Bundick) has mastered yet another song which combines electronic components with a classical twist. “Saturday Love” is the first offering from the upcoming EP, Freaking Out. This is the closest to slow-jam territory Toro Y Moi has gone, and he manages to make it sound his own. His echoing vocals are seductive and mesmerising as he recites the days of the week counting up to Saturday – something that’s hard to do. The escalating piano accompanied by the mellow synth layered in the background gives the song a chilled-out vibe. Towards the end of the song, italo-disco synths kick in and give off that Friday-night, 80s-disco feeling, sending you back in a musical time machine. “Saturday Love,” a cover of an 80s classic by Alexander O’Neal and Cherelle, is sultry and atmospheric, veering away from the ever ubiquitous ‘chillwave’ tag Bundick has been squashed into.
