The Knocks and Dragonette make mid-tempo magic on “The Hero”

NYC duo The Knocks and Canadian singer Dragonette earned a Grammy nomination with their last collab โ€“ and their new record โ€œThe Heroโ€ will likely get another. The pre-chorus and chorus of this song are dazzling, and Dragonette (aka Martina Sorbara) has the best hair in pop music history with the possible exception of Robert Plant.

I donโ€™t usually toss around the word โ€œgeniusโ€, but The Knocks (James Patterson and Ben Ruttner) are songwriting/production Einsteins. Their latest work with Dragonette takes place in the fictional setting of Revelation Technologies, a 1980s company where Aquaria (RuPaulโ€™s Drag Race winner) is the resident muse.

Dragonette says, โ€œThis song is about the banality of how a relationship can turn cold โ€“ when itโ€™s not a dramatic explosion of betrayal or strong emotions that crash together. Itโ€™s about finding yourself in the midst of something else, unseen and unknowable, making the question โ€œis this working?โ€ hard to answer.”

Itโ€™s not easy to make music that feels effortlessly enchanting, but The Knocks and Dragonette have achieved just that on โ€œThe Heroโ€. Itโ€™s time to buy stock in Revelation Technologies immediately.
