Looks like we have our first big selling albums of 2011!
In the US, The Decemberists’ sixth full-length album The King Is Dead easily grabbed the #1 spot on the Billboard Top 100 and sold 93,567 copies, which is double the amount of albums Cake’s Showroom of Compassion sold last week in the same position. This is a lucky break for the folk-rock quintet, as 2009’s The Hazards of Love sold only a mere 19,000 copies in its first week.
As for the UK, according to The Official Charts Company, Adele’s second LP 21 hit #1 with 69,000 copies sold in one day and over 100,000 since the release on Monday, which is more than the sales from the rest of the Top 10 albums in the UK altogether. The first day sales alone were three-and-a-half times the amount sold of Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans, which made it to #2 on the charts. Although the chart isn’t official yet (OCC will release the full list this Sunday), it looks like Adele could even push her last album, 2008’s 19, into the top 5. It currently sits at #4 on the charts from #8 as of last week. Hopefully, her success will continue in The States, as 21 releases here February 22.
