Dutch band Pip Blom recently announced their new album Welcome Break with the single “Keep It Together”, and return today with a second helping in the form of “It Should Have Been Fun”. The band’s leader, Pip Blom, says:
“When writing the tracks for the record I wanted there to be a song that didn’t have the structure of verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus 2x. It’s a common structure of course and I figured it could be cool to switch it up a bit. When the track starts it feels like it’s going to be a very sensitive, calm song. The verses capture the feeling of sadness, disappointment in yourself and someone else. But when the chorus starts the energy switches. It’s more angry, being fed up, wanting to change something, like there’s a tipping point. I really like how the track has these different parts that flow into each other. I can’t wait to play this track live and really give it our all when the final chorus hits.”
Once again, Pip Blom prove that a little adjustment to dynamics can open a whole new avenue of excitement, and the step-by-step build of “It Should Have Been Fun” pays off in spades. It helps that it finds Blom in a dour mood, flipping between apathy and frustration, which is perfectly matched by the instrumentation’s tight flips from daydreaming indie to gale force rock. We’ve all had those moments when something doesn’t live up to expectation, and in hindsight we vacillate between disappointment and anger; it’s a visceral feeling that Pip Blom capture perfectly on “It Should Have Been Fun”, and the final furious spits of “I wish I was dreaming” will undoubtedly provide a great moment of communal catharsis when the time arrives for them to play it live.
