Philadelphia trio Another Michael share charming double header “New Music” and “Boring For The Times”

Another Michael are a Philadelphia-based trio made up of singer/multi-instrumentalist Michael Doherty, guitarist/keyboardist Alenni Davis and bassist Nick Sebastiano. They’ve released a couple of EPs in the last few years, but are making a big step going forward as they’ve been signed by Run For Cover Records, and the trio’s first release for the venerated indie label arrives today in the form of a single “New Music” b/w “Boring For The Times”.

While the title “New Music” might at first suggest a cool detachedness from the idea of putting out songs, the complete opposite is actually true – it’s an extremely earnest song about discovering new music from friends’ recommendations. Another Michael begin the song in intimate indie styling, subtly expanding the song with pastel hues, taking us inside the headphones with Doherty as he takes a late night listen to a new musical discovery. This is a perfect approach for Doherty’s high and sailing voice, not to mention his penetrating lyricism, which sees him spiralling out of impressions of the titular “New Music” and into honest reflections on the world and his own life.

“Boring For The Times” ups the grooviness, with an underlying R&B flavour that suggests it’s the more upbeat cousin to the a-side. And yet, it’s still rife with discontent, finding Doherty up at 4am and his brain running a million miles an hour. It all combines to make “Boring For The Times” into a perfect anthem for introverts.

With Another Michael’s debut album soon to be announced, make sure you follow them on Bandcamp, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
