Micro Talk set a confident course on shapeshifting single “Defense”

Micro Talk, the duo of Nana Adjoa and Tim Schakel, casually blew our minds with previous single “Particles Scatter”. While that song documented the bliss of endless freedom and possibility, its successor “Defense” embraces the virtues of taking one specific direction. Once again anchored by the philosophies of Kierkegaard, this midtempo dream pop/ trip hop hybrid takes on several confident, albeit offbeat left turns.

A tantalising synth bass groove enters the pleasure zone at around a minute and a half, and 30 seconds later, an orgasmic swell. Finally, there’s the strange, somewhat eerie climax of Adjoa’s pitched-down, muted vocals. It’s almost like a sonic Powers of Ten, one that vividly expands into the unknowns, comfortably out of depth. “Defense is about persevering with confidence and daring to let go,” Schakel comments. “To be without doubts,  to dare to go into one direction. As Kierkegaard writes, “The conclusions of passion are the only reliable ones.”

The song offers another glimpse of Micro Talk’s upcoming EP, which should be out sometime this year.

Listen to “Defense” below and find it on the streaming services.

Micro Talk previously released the 2019 EP Expanding Dark. Last year, Nana Adjoa released excellent debut LP Big Dreaming Ants, which you can order via Bandcamp.
