Kim Gordon is “like a cat in the dark and then she is the darkness,” who makes paintings and portfolios too

When you type “Kim Gordon” into the search bar on our site, three hits come up all regarding Sonic Youth. When you type “Sonic Youth” into the search bar on our site, three pages of hits come up. At first, I was unsure if I should include an article about Kim Gordon in this week’s news posts, but I guess Sonic Youth and Kim, herself, are popular enough topics that someone will read this.

We all know Kim Gordon as the singer and bassist of Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore’s wife and super-cool New York native. As well as all of this, though, she is also a clothing designer, video director and a visual artist – with a love for Stevie Nicks. Kim has always had a love for and been involved with visual arts, (she wrote for Artforum in the early ’80s and even worked in a few Soho galleries), and her new project with New York boutique, No.6, combines her love for both visual art and music.

Gordon has taken the lyric “she is like a cat in the dark and then she is the darkness” from the Fleetwood Mac song “Rhiannon” and has made a total of 14 paintings that are of nothing but one word taken directly from the lyric, I assume, and put on canvas. These paintings were then turned into mimeograph prints, (a mimeograph print is pretty much a low-budget-looking photocopy), and will be put together and published as a portfolio.

There is seemingly very little information available on this subject outside of the tiny article in this month’s Nylon (pg. 88 for those who are interested); but even the little bit of news is good news. This book is a perfect present for the friend who loves good music and interesting art, as it pleases both aspects of the personality and will be on sale at the boutique or via the No.6 website this summer.
