Horsegirl express their affection on the delightfully earnest “World of Pots and Pans”

With their debut album now officially on the horizon, rising Chicago trio Horsegirl are furtively giving us glances of what to expect from it. We’ve heard “Billy” and “Anti-glory”, and today we have “World of Pots and Pans”, which, despite its title, is a love song. They say:

“‘World of Pots and Pans’ is the first love song Horsegirl has ever written—or the closest thing to it. We wrote it in Penelope’s basement while preparing to leave for our first ever tour. The lyrics, inspired by the misinterpretation of a Television Personalities lyric, imagine a (possibly unrequited) romance unfolding through references to Tall Dwarfs, Belle & Sebastian, and The Pastels.”

A golden gazer, “World of Pots and Pans” just has that tone that immediately suggests warmth and affection, and Horsegirl crown it with a swooningly earnest ode to “Emma”. While notes of all the bands they mentioned can be heard in the song, it occurs to me as the kind of song that their labelmates Yo La Tengo make and have made; declaring their adoration in simple terms; worried about losing them; wanting to go dancing. It doesn’t need to be complex to strike straight to the heart.

“World of Pots and Pans” also has a lovely lyric video, with the band saying:

“We made the lyric video in a couple hours. The three of us had a fully formed vision of what it should look like and were able to quickly execute the real-time “animation” in only two takes. It feels special to showcase our creative chemistry, and Nora was able to finally carry out her childhood dreams of making an OK Go (ish) type video.”

Check that out below or find the song on streaming platforms.

Horsegirl’s debut album Versions of Modern Performance comes out on June 3 through Matador (pre-order/save). You can catch them on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Bandcamp.
