Hana Vu has followed up last year’s excellent debut album Public Storage (one of our albums of 2021) with a new EP called Parking Lot.
The six track offering features two brand new songs as well as four live versions of highlights from Public Storage. The opener, “Parking Lot”, is a colossal rocker revolving around the same themes as the album, building quiet contemplations into a towering bluster.
The other new song, “Mr. Lonely”, is a response to Bobby Vinton’s 1962 track of the same name, which was about a homesick soldier. Vu says: “I thought that the sentiments of the original song were almost pathetic when put into today’s context.” She matches that swelling sadness with a heavy-yet-floating arrangement that emulates the dreary thought process of someone stuck at home, dreaming of their beloved battling overseas.
