Bobby Gillespie and Jehnny Beth reveal collaborative album with the sorrowful “Remember We Were Lovers”

Savages frontperson Jehnny Beth just released her debut solo album last summer, but she’s evidently found inspiration in working with Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie, as the duo have today revealed a collaborative album called Utopian Ashes, which will be released on July 2.

On its genesis, Jehnny Beth says: “In the same way you create characters for a novel, we’ve created characters here. But you put yourself in it, because you’re trying to understand the human situation. The singing has to be authentic. That’s all that matters.”

Gillespie adds: “When you write a song you marry the personal with the fictional and make art. I was thinking about two people living alone, together but apart, existing and suffering in a psychic malaise, who plough on because of responsibilities and commitments. It’s about the impermanence of everything — an existential fact that everyone has to face at some point in their lives.”

The first taste of this novelistic songwriting comes from the poignant “Remember We Were Lovers”. You can listen to it on streaming platforms or watch the video below.
