Artist to Watch: Herban Philosophy

Herban Philosophy is an Independent Hip Hop group put together by The INCeption (Clayton Polhemus) and Houdini (Justin Sherwood) in 2008. The duo both have been jazz musicians for 10 years now , Clayton being a jazz bassist, and Justin being a jazz guitarist. Being musically trained, they had the knowledge of proper songwriting/soloing technique, but they never seemed to fit into the lifestyle that went with the privileged jazz musicians that consume the genre in southern California. So it was a natural move to find a niche in their fav genre – hip hop, being that the potential of the genre is limitless, and the basic fundamentals of jazz music is still rooted very deeply in the hip hop genre.

Having been working on the newest HP album 110 for about a year now, they’ve put many projects into place along side of HP. Herban Philosphy started gigging heavily with Aggressive Expansion, which is a Progressive Jazz trio which includes longtime musician/friend Curtis Lourenco on Drums. They also began a project called Green Peace, which is primarily a DnB/Dubstep duo featuring DJ Madnote & thingWon.

The end result of all these projects was an umbrella for these projects to develop under, and with Herban Philosophy being the figurehead of the operation, they decided to title the production team “HP Productions”. With the HP Production Team in full effect, and the highly anticipated release of HP’s second album 110 – as well as two independent solo albums by The INCeption as well as Houdini. Already ambitious, the duo also found it necessary to create a venue for this music to be performed and experienced on a weekly basis. They called this venue Common Ground. Common Ground is basically a humble club that features live sets from resident DJ’s Madnote and thingWon, as well as live performances from Aggressive Expansion, and of course, Herban Philosophy. They all have different musical styles, but in the end… we all walk on common ground.

Herban Philosophy will be performing at Roc-c’s album release party on Aug. 8th at Zanzibar in Santa Monica, other performing acts include EVIDENCE, Zoolay, Chino XL & Oh No. info posted on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=103874809668132&ref=mf
