It’s been five years since the release of CHVRCHES‘ last album, 2021’s Screen Violence, but the Glasgow synth-pop trio are now back with new music and an acidic new attitude. It makes something of a shift in their musical approach, but it’s one that fits their evolution from bright electronic synthesists to a collective which acknowledges the countless shadows surrounding them.
“This is the longest break we had ever taken between albums and when we got together to write new music, we wanted to really push ourselves and not be retreading ground we’d walked before,” says Mayberry. “I really think we achieved that. It feels like the most coherent vision we’ve had as a band. We’re excited to be back…“
For our first glimpse of what’s to come, the band have shared “Roses”, a vitriolic anthem documenting the darker aspects of Britain’s social structures, giving Mayberry a chance to snarl and spew venom in a way we’ve rarely experienced before. The emotions she embraces here are laced with bitter recriminations and aggressive accusations. And despite the caustic theatricality, the melody manages to crawl under your skin, a persuasive suggestion that urges you on to take a closer look at the machinations of the world around you.
