London trio bar italia will release their new album, Some Like It Hot, on October 17. The band – consisting of Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi, and Sam Fenton – have long perfected a sort of ecstatic post-punk delirium that incorporates jangle-pop evocations and hook-drenched pop apoplectics. Their latest is a further refinement of this cross-genre pollination, a sound that feels familiar only until you pay closer attention. Taking their underground roots and connecting them to their arena-sized ambitions, they’ve developed a sound both widely cinematic and intimately scrawled.
They’ve already given us a glimpse of the record with “Cowbella”, and now they’re offered up the kinetic rush of “Fundraiser”. It’s a track that lays out its influences (Wire, Gang of Four, X…maybe a touch of Flying Nun Records) for all to see and then proceeds to shape them into a series of dizzying architectural curiosities. The guitars bound and echo around in the song’s expansive headspace, while their voices wander through its melodic post-punk recesses. It’s a chaotic shot in the arm and a compelling entry into their already impressive history.
