Fairhazel submerges into Beatles-style brilliance on “Submarine”

Alt-folk artist Hugh Macdonald (aka Fairhazel) has lived in France, South Africa and the U.S., but his music bears the stamp of his native England. Fairhazel’s new single “Submarine” is effortlessly brilliant and delicately melodic – almost like a lost track from The Beatles’ Rubber Soul.

“Submarine” is the first release from Fairhazel’s upcoming album Brief Encounters (not to be confused with the 1945 British film Brief Encounter). Despite its enchanting melody, the song explores a topic that’s far from lighthearted.

Says Fairhazel: “It’s the story of a mother whose daughter passes away and who spends a day at a carnival to try and find some distraction, unsuccessfully. It’s the story of loss, grief and the long road ahead.”

Paul McCartney is the all-time master at turning tragic storylines into unforgettable music, a la “Eleanor Rigby”. Fairhazel is a worthy candidate for taking Paul’s mantle in the years ahead.
