Self Esteem — the moniker of musician Rebecca Lucy Taylor — has announced the forthcoming release of their new album, A Complicated Woman, which is due out April 25 via Polydor. It’s her first record since the release of her 2021 behemoth, Prioritize Pleasure. Featuring appearances from Moonchild Sanelly, Sue Tompkins, Nadine Shah, and others, the collection focuses on themes of taking back the reins of your life and exposing the social inequities imposed upon women. This isn’t new territory for Taylor, but in light of recent political changes, the attention feels more necessary than ever.
“Focus is Power” is our first exposure to A Complicated Woman, and it’s a gorgeous pop ballad that soars via the anthemic structure of Taylor’s voice. The euphoric harmonies that surround her at any given time provide ample opportunity for the hairs to stand up on the back of your neck, with that warm flush rising to your face and your body seeming to move of its own accord. It’s an opulent, theatrical call to arms, one that doesn’t retreat from confrontation but barrels through anything (and anyone) in its way.
