We’re just over a week away from Waxahatchee‘s new album Tigers Blood and we’ve been blessed with one final pre-album single called “365”, which follows up “Right Back To It” and “Bored”. On the new one, Katie Crutchfield says:
“‘365’ is a song about codependency as it pertains to addiction and relationships with addicts. It’s something I’ve dealt with a lot in my life and I really wanted to distill the nerves and emotions down to their purest form in this song.
“Brad Cook and I had a lot of ideas we tried for this one, but in the end, we tracked it live just him, Jake Lenderman and myself running the song a couple of times together in the room.“
That decision to track it live and stripped down is the perfect way to deliver the lessons of this song, with Crutchfield singing out in her most resonant range, double tracked for additional oomph. She’s singing about desperate, depressing times, but does so in such beautiful terms: “I catch your poison arrow / I catch your same disease / Bow like a weeping willow / Buckling at the knees / Begging you please”. She’s clearly come out of these experiences scarred, but she’s not afraid to brandish them, to show them as a symbol of where she’s been and where she is now – able to belt out an absolute beauty in honour of those equally hurt people who went through those struggles with her.
