Akira Galaxy’s new single “Teardrop” is dream-pop at its best, with an accompanying black and white video that’s reminiscent of early ’60s French cinema.
Although Galaxy was born and raised in Seattle, she seems perfectly at home on the streets of Paris in this video. “Teardrop” is immersive and tantalizing, and Galaxy’s voice has a mystical vibe that many dream-poppers aspire to but rarely achieve.
Commenting on the video, Galaxy notes, “I wanted to explore the duality and different dimensions of love. With directors Angela and Silken we filmed this in Paris and the video really draws from our love of French noir cinema. I think the layout of the city lends itself to the idea of running away from yourself as there are lot of alleys, high vantage points and staircases that were incorporated. The black and white grainy quality of the clip conveys a romantic softness and portrays a journey of light into darkness; tenderness and fragility turning into madness and passionate delirium.”
With “Teardrop”, you get the best of two worlds: a thoroughly contemporary song wed to the spirit of French movie classics back when Bardot and Moreau were screen idols. With more songs like this, Akira may one day be in a pop galaxy all her own.
