Cardiff-based rising producer and songwriter Alice Low has returned with another provocatively-named single called “Sodomizer”, following up recent smash “Rim Job”. The new one finds Low pouring out her fears and frustrations from living in a country where trans people seem to be consistently in the headlines for all the wrong, misinformed reasons, as she explains:
“I open the news and my entire identity reduced to sex, violence. Going to get milk, bread, have a little piss. A girl gotta empty her bladder, she ain’t in there to fuck you. It isn’t aggressive. It’s possible to fight when you’re strong, and there’s people in your life that you love, and bring colour, and light, but when all that is gone, and you’re alone, suddenly the weight of the world’s prejudice hits right where your power comes from.
“I felt moved to talk about it. It was the most present feeling in my mind at the time. At the end of last year, when the days were short and it was cold and it was dark, and I would open the BBC and be labelled a rapist. I wanted to defend myself. I couldn’t do it in total earnest.
“I don’t know if this will be the last time I lay down these faux-Prince grooves. I’m a very prolific and impulsive artist, I work quickly, without hesitation, loving all my ideas equally, no matter how much emotional weight they carry. Don’t forget to dance.”
There’s not much to add to that already vivid picture of the mindset that Low describes above – except to emphasise the fact that, despite “Sodomizer” being filled with apprehension and anger, it’s still a downright jam. Sure, she may have borrowed quite heavily from Prince, but if the Purple One heard what Low is singing about, and the way she pulls off the funk while also transmitting her horror and personality, he would undoubtedly approve. Put the world’s archaic thinkers out of your mind for a moment and just get down to the cathartic groove that “Sodomizer” provides.
