Alice Low shrugs off homophobes on the psych-pop romp “Fruitcake”, announces debut EP

Alice Low has revealed that she will release her debut body of work, the Transatlantic Sugar EP, on April 21. It features previous singles “Cry-Baby” and “Show Business” as well as this week’s new offering, “Fruitcake”. On the new song, Low reveals:

“I grew up in a real homophobic town, and that abuse penetrated me. My spine permanently curved from the pressure. Every time I inched closer to pleasure, the violence came back, and I became my own bully. Fruit Cake is the rejection of prejudice, and the bliss of vulnerable sex.

Ever since emerging with “Ladydaddy” in 2021, Low has shared her experiences of being a transgender woman with clarity, cleverness and empathy. This continues with “Fruitcake”, and again she’s fearless in the way she recounts the abuses that she’s suffered through her life, and somehow the song manages to be light and joyous. It’s a Bowie-esque jaunt through streets where she has “horrible lies” shouted at her, where she has been “hiding from the same fears” and thinking she has to change her face. Nevertheless, musically, “Fruitcake” stands tall and proud as she struts “into the magic night”. The chorus may be a plea to “shoot me far away”, but the fluffy and fun way it’s delivered suggests it’s a case of Low simply being bored of the abuse, rather than afraid of it.
