Alice Low brings her heartbreak to vivid, vulgar life in “Rim Job”

Rising Cardiff-based talent Alice Low returns this week with a new single called “Rim Job”. She explains:

I wanted to frame my heartbreak, and pain through the hyper-sexualised and alienated lens that all transgender stories are framed. To take my universal, human experience and distort it into the only shape that the public can seemingly understand, fingers in asses, dicks in asses, and dysphoria; but by diving deeper, the only thing actually up that ass is a normal story about a relationship breaking down. Enjoy.

Like Alice Low’s previous singles, you’re never entirely sure where you stand with “Rim Job” – both lyrically and instrumentally it keeps you on your toes. It begins as a confessional synth slow burner, Low describing her defeated state through honest imagery, which culminates in comparing it to a “loveless rim job”. That shocking image, delivered tenderly, actually helps bring us closer to her, bringing her heartbreak and pain to vivid life. “Rim Job” then shifts gears into a bouncing pop song, ripe with weird sonics and Low’s panting, howling ad-libs. She alters voice to a more cartoonish but stronger persona, determined to get over her pain and keep striving for love, both physical and romantic – heartbreak be damned.
