Amsterdam-based songwriter Mazey Haze is approaching the release of her debut EP, Always Dancing, next month, and this week she has shared the album’s dreamy title track. About the song “Always Dancing”, she reveals:
“Always Dancing is a song about having an intervention with yourself after a rough period where lots of things have drastically changed. Trying to figure out what it means that you have been doing and where you want to go (for the first time). Realising you have to adapt to this new situation and wanting to grow with it so you can move forward. Being closed off after giving yourself away too easily, without thinking about it. For me personally, this song is about my first realisation that I can and need to take control over my own life. I was starting to feel quite okay while being alone and started seeing the first bits of light after (what felt like) a long time of darkness.”
Although inspired by a time of stress and re-evaluation of life, “Always Dancing” is a melodic and textural delight; a cloud of determination that caresses your ears as you listen. Mazey Haze’s guitar is used in broad strokes to paint a picture of her life of uncertainty, as we “follow [her] steps through the night” while she’s trying to figure out how to seize control of her life’s journey. The chorus blows up into a panoramic shot; it’s like seeing into her mind as the emotional revolution happens: a glorious array of guitar chords and sparkling keyboards letting us know that she’s reached her epiphany. She knows now what she has to do to get where she wants to be, and the euphoria comes out in a beautiful blast of dream pop.
