While the news dropped last week of Chromatics’ unceremonious split, their label, Italians Do It Better, run by figurehead Johnny Jewel, has today reminded us just how many other riches they have on their roster – and done it in the form of a 20 track Madonna covers compilation. The compilation is named Italians Do It Better, not just because it’s the name of the label, but because the label took its name from the t-shirt Madonna wears in the “Papa Don’t Preach” video. The compilation also drops today, August 16, 2021, which happens to be the Queen of Pop’s birthday.
The project was sparked during the pandemic, when Desire singer Megan Louise sent out a message to all the artists asking simply, “If you could cover your favorite Madonna song…What would it be?” – and the results are quite a delight.
On our initial listen, the standouts have been Sally Shapiro’s “Holiday”, Jorja Chalmers’ “Justify My Love” and Pink Gloves’ “What It Feel Like For A Girl” – but every song is an unimpeachable banger. Given the IDIB sparkle and swagger only makes them moreso.
