Wayland deliver retro rock on “Hollywood Sign”

Wayland are a duo that hails from the heartland of America: Wayland, Michigan (population 4,400 souls). Their music is a fusion of rock, blues and country that reminds me of Tom Petty and Bonnie Raitt from yesteryear โ€“ and The War And Treaty and Zach Bryan on todayโ€™s charts. โ€œHollywood Signโ€ (featuring CeCe Frey) is one of the highlights of their new album On The Way.

โ€œHollywood Signโ€ is a hooky throwback to the days when midtempo rock ruled the airwaves. The song has a Neil Young-style authenticity and grit. Both frontman Mitchel Arnold and lead guitarist Phillip Vilenski are musical vagabonds. They sometimes hang out in Joshua Tree, California, Gram Parsonsโ€™ old stomping grounds. And theyโ€™ve been a supporting act on two celebrity rock cruises (Kiss and Bon Jovi).

Waylandโ€™s On The Way album is out now.
