talker battles sand and uncertainty on “Gold Rush”

โ€œGold Rushโ€ is the first release from LA artist talker (Celeste Tauchar) since her debut album Iโ€™m Telling You The Truth in 2024. The song has a pulsating, primal sound and features some of the artistโ€™s most blistering, beautiful vocals to date. In fact, her singing on this track is reminiscent of two legendary vocalists: Annie Lennox and Wolf Aliceโ€™s Ellie Rowsell.

The video for the song was shot in Californiaโ€™s desolate Mojave Desert, which would explain lyrics like โ€œIโ€™m spooning sand in my mouth, tryna swallow it down.โ€ But those lines are preceded by the cryptic revelation that โ€œsheโ€™s not from here / Iโ€™m starting to think maybe neither am I.โ€ Itโ€™s difficult to tell whether talker is singing about a career or relationship desert โ€“ or both.

Celeste says, โ€œโ€˜Gold Rushโ€™ was the first song I wrote for this record where I really felt like I had a clear vision of where I was taking things. Chasing after something I canโ€™t put my finger on, always feeling like what I want is just out of reach, but realizing that I have to look myself in the mirror to see that nothing will ever be good enough until I commit to something. I can always change my mind.

โ€œSonically, I really wanted it to feel like exactly that
. Out in the desert, hallucinating and just grasping at things that I canโ€™t hold onto. The jumping-off point for a lot of the journey on this next record.โ€

This song abounds with sun-bleached mystery thatโ€™s the perfect teaser for talkerโ€™s next full-length album.
