Miss Machina questions her motives on “Serial Monogamist”

Ash Smith is a Dallas-bred, LA-based artist who records under the name of Miss Machina. The title song to her new debut album Serial Monogamist is an ultra-hooky, beautifully crafted pop gem thatโ€™s reminiscent of Sabrina Carpenterโ€™s slyly humorous best.

โ€œโ€˜Serial Monogamistโ€™ started as a joke,โ€ says Miss M. โ€œIt was written during a time when I was freshly single and didn’t know how to date or do relationships casually (still don’t, let’s be honest). It didn’t matter how much I liked the person, or how much they liked me, I had an insatiable need to prove that I could be chosen. It made me feel violent and not like myself. I felt like a serial killer with an identifiable MO that kept repeating the same crime, with the irony being that the only victim of the crime was myself.โ€

She adds, โ€œAt its core, this is what the album is about: unlearning the desire to be chosen and learning the art of choosing the self, and having a laugh about it along the way.โ€

This song feels like Miss Machinaโ€™s breakout moment, thanks to her combination of droll insights and songwriting wizardry.
