Track Review: Bass Drum Of Death – “White Fright”

[3qtr; 2012]

The Mississippi-based garage-rock duo Bass Drum of Death has been pretty busy for most of the year. In fact, ever since their stellar debut GB City, it seems that vocalist/guitarist John Barrett and drummer Colin Sneed have been touring nonstop. But last week, they released a cut entitled “White Fright” from their upcoming as-of-yet untitled sophomore album. That’s one hell of a work ethic, I mean how in the world are these guys even finding time to record or write new material?

If you were a fan of GB City, then you’ll find an immediate liking to “White Fright.” It’s a two-and-a-half minute number that instantly catches your attention with a slick guitar hook backed by a barreling mid-tempo 4/4 drum beat. About a minute in, Barrett throws in a brief guitar lick drenched in distorted fuzz. In short, Bass Drum of Death pretty much picks off where they left off from their first LP. “White Fright” is a solid track displaying tons of grit and raw attitude. However, it’s really nothing we haven’t seen before from them as it sounds rather similar to their previous songs such as “Velvet Itch” and “Get Found,” providing some reason to worry that the new album might come off as GB City 2.0. But that kind of talk at this point is premature and hopefully the talented duo shows they can take their sound into another level.
