St Jasper isn’t afraid to have the conversations many of us go to near any lengths to avoid. The London-based artist has begun to make a name for himself by picking away at the inherently awkward nature of human interaction, and his latest, “Dial Tone”, is the swiftest he’s cut to the quick yet.
Speaking on the song, he explains: “Dial tone is a song about uncomfortable conversations. It’s about two people putting off an unwanted, long overdue talk. Lyrically I tried to explore all the ways that human beings can communicate without saying anything, awkward glances, closed off body language, waves and nods and I also tried to leave a lot of space in the music to convey the sense of distance that can exist between two people even when they are physically close together.“
To say the least it’s an effective salvo, with a simmering, nearly ambient electronic background offset by stuttering, unsettling drumbeats.
Named for a fishing trawler his grandfather spent decades roaming the Atlantic on, St Jasper is something of a guide into unknown waters himself. Follow his trail right into “Dial Tone.”
