We may have to wait a bit longer before we get all the details of Sparks‘ upcoming album, MAD!, but that doesn’t mean the band is completely locking us out of the house. They shared “Do Things My Own Way” last week, and they’re already back with a video directed by Amber Navarro. Pairing the track’s ecstatic synth spikes and bombastic keys with bouts of dense guitar work, the band deliver a song that recalls the idiosyncracies of their early work while also highlighting the more populist sounds of their later releases. Working with Navarro, the Mael brothers attempt to illuminate the ongoing crisis of falling pianos. If just one person is crushed by a piano descending suddenly from a tall building, then we’re all at risk.
“Collaborating with Sparks has been my dream for a long time that took me on my own career journey,” says Navarro. “It was a new experience getting to work in a fully digital surreal world, pieced together by Dillon Petrillo, and see it all come together at the end. Overall, Ron survived his falls with just a few minor cuts.“
The band further explains: “We hope this video, even in a very small way, finally starts a meaningful dialogue about the dangers of pianos falling out of tall buildings.“
