Hotly-tipped Brighton quartet The New Eves have revealed the details of their debut album: It’s called The New Eve Is Rising and will arrive on 1 August through Transgressive.
They’ve also shared two new tracks, “Rivers Run Red” and “The New Eve”, both of which originated from poems written by band members.
On “Rivers Run Red”, they reveal: “The initial lyrics are a poem written by Ella when she was a teenager. It was never intended to be a final part of the song, it just happened to be something she knew by heart whilst we were jamming […] This whole song was kind of an accident and because of that it’s had so many incarnations and has taken us to new places, like Nina’s ‘disco cello’ and Violet’s camping cup percussion debut. Now we love it.”
There’s nothing accidental about the final product, with the quartet jamming hypnotically, almost maniacally as they repeat the titular phrase with a glint in their eyes. There might be a pixie-like flute dancing around, but that seems to be just to lure you in before The New Eves deliver mythological imagery, filled with drama and gore. Their combined mania builds up into an unlikely folk-dance marvel that’s completely irresistible.
“The New Eve”, predictably, stands as a mission statement, with the band saying: “The poem was written by Nina in her family’s cabin in the Swedish mountains. It’s about us. It’s for our younger selves. It’s about everyone. It’s for anyone. It’s a song to be played very loud and to run away to, or rob a bank to, and march and dance and laugh. In a way it’s a love song. It’s an ode. And a glorious battle cry.”
Indeed, the track starts as a spoken-word mantra that seems to be a sort of conjuring of the titular “New Eve”, telling a tale of inner strength and self-belief. As it progresses, it naturally picks up velocity as the New Eves’ power grows and glows, morphing into a steamrolling folk-punk riot. You’re invited to join them in their quest – only a fool would turn them down.
