Sophie Jamieson takes control of the gloom with the stately “Forward”

British artist Sophie Jamieson has multiple talents, and in recent years has been exploring other avenues, but in 2020 she has returned to music. Following the release of Hammer EP earlier this year, she will be releasing a new set called Release EP in December. The new EP was written “during one of the loneliest periods of my life” according to Jamieson, and lead single “Forward” takes us right into that atmosphere. On the song she says:

“Forward’ is about trying to find some control amid chaos. My instinct for years had been to deny that a period of time had happened, to empty myself of its trace – but at this point, I began to understand that I could accept it, that it is part of who I am and that I do not have to destroy the evidence of my past in order to move forward.”

In the new song, dulled piano chords quietly undulate beneath Jamieson’s powerfully projected voice, and it feels like she is courting low moods and depression, as though after years of turning away from the darkness she is now inviting it in so she can better understand it. A dynamically simple percussive element gives “Forward” some added structure, but Jamieson’s unwavering voice and poetry remins the focus of the song, and it is mesmerising. She dances with her demons and quietly overcomes them, looking forward to the next challenge with a fire gently glowing from within her.

Sophie Jamieson’s Release EP will be out on December 1. You can find her on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
