New York artist Lucie Lozinski, aka Ski Team, has a lot in common with J-Patt from The Knocks: she writes great songs and loves New York Knicks basketball. She even wrote a song called “Thank You, Jalen Brunson” in honor of the hoops star who’s reviving the Knickerbockers’ fortunes.
Music-biz insiders have quickly realized how extraordinary Lucie is, both as a singer and composer. There’s an Aimee Mann-like brilliance suffusing every aspect of her music, so it’s not surprising that one of her first producers (Scott Seiver) also worked with Mann. Ski Team is now collaborating with acclaimed producer Daniel Knowles (Sharon Van Etten, Cigarettes After Sex) and the results thus far have been remarkable. Her latest single “Islands” creates a majestic mood with its gorgeous, unhurried harmonies.
“The improvised melody and harmony of ‘Islands’ had something so sweet and somber about it,” says Lozinski. “Then we just rapid fire layered harmonies, all unplanned, just whatever I felt like singing. I think that improvised spirit of listening and just doing what feels right – whatever comes out – is what makes this song so special. There was very little planning and designing it. I just sang a song from the soul into the mic, and you can feel that.”
Lucie’s previous single “Me” has a sophisticated sheen that’s irresistible, with vocal nonchalance that reminds me a bit of ’80s star Suzanne Vega.
Even though it’s hard to ski on an island, Ski Team feels destined to be the Lindsey Vonn of American pop.
